About the criteria and sources

Source-backed means an operator statement or a specific directory/community menu claim—not our inspection, certification or allergy guarantee.
Directory claims are labeled separately. Choose “Whole menu — operator claims only” for operator statements.
“Some dishes / fryers” covers specific preparations, not the full menu. Named exceptions remain visible.
Gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, refined sugar-free and seed-oil-free are separate criteria. Unknown criteria do not pass selected positive filters.
A reported cooking fat alone does not qualify a listing. Entries with no source-backed dietary match are excluded.
Menus, ingredients and operations can change. Check sauces, toppings, supplier pre-frying and shared equipment. Research dates are not inspection dates.

About the listings

Vegan food excludes animal-derived ingredients, including meat, fish, dairy, eggs and honey. Vegetarian excludes meat/fish and may include dairy, eggs and honey. Documented vegan choices are vegetarian-compatible; derived classifications are labeled and do not imply separate vegetarian advertising. Plant-based marketing alone is not every-item proof.

Whole-menu and individual-option claims remain distinct. Evidence comes from restaurant websites, brand-wide menus, editorial coverage or directory leads. None is a kitchen inspection. Unknown does not mean unsafe, unsuitable or seed oils present.

Oil exclusions: soybean, canola/rapeseed, sunflower, corn, cottonseed, safflower, grapeseed, rice-bran, peanut and sesame oils, plus unspecified vegetable-oil blends. Source definitions can differ. No record proves independently audited compliance with every oil listed.

What does “non-toxic” actually mean?

A starting point for better questions—not a promise that every product works for every person.

What it means

In ordinary language, “non-toxic” suggests something is not poisonous or harmful. On its own, it does not tell you the substance, amount, exposure, person, or use being evaluated. A label is not a substitute for that context.

The term is not a free pass for unsupported marketing. In its environmental marketing guidance, the FTC says non-toxic claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence and appropriate qualifications.

How we use it on Des Approved

On Des Approved, this is browsing shorthand for our published, category-specific ingredient and material preferences. We record the actual formula or materials, the source, and the limitations—not a guarantee of harmlessness.

A disclosed formula is not the same thing as an independently tested product. A brand’s claim, a third-party certification, and a laboratory result are different kinds of evidence. We do not treat them as interchangeable.

Keep in mind

Natural, plant-based, organic, unscented and non-toxic are not interchangeable answers to the same question. Products outside our preferences are not automatically harmful; products included here are not universally suitable.

How to read our filters & evidence

Whole menu, some options, research leads and pending reviews: the small labels that make a big difference.

What it means

Our filters organize recorded information. They do not turn a source claim into independent testing, and a recent interface update is not a fresh review of every listing.

For restaurants, a reported whole-menu claim and a few suitable options are different scopes. “Not confirmed” means the research has not established the answer—not that a restaurant has been tested and failed.

How we use it on Des Approved

Evidence may come from a restaurant, a brand-wide policy, location-specific coverage or a directory lead. Read the details for scope, source and date, and use the evidence filters when you want a narrower source type.

For products, look at the exact item, formula or material, documented preferences and research status. A listing marked pending has not completed its screen and is kept out of documented-preference matches.

Keep in mind

A restaurant’s reported gluten-free menu is not an independent celiac-safety certification. A product ingredient screen is not a laboratory safety test. Photos illustrate topics, not verified products or meals.

Gluten-free: ingredients, menus & preparation

Understand the difference between a gluten-free claim, an available option and how your meal is prepared.

What it means

Gluten is associated with wheat, barley, rye and their crossbred varieties. For FDA-regulated packaged foods using a gluten-free claim, the rules include ingredient restrictions and less than 20 parts per million of unavoidable gluten. “Gluten-free” does not mean a measurement of absolute zero.

The FDA packaged-food rule is not a restaurant certification program. FDA recommends that restaurant menu claims be consistent with its definition; our directory has not tested restaurant meals.

How we use it on Des Approved

We distinguish a reported whole-menu claim from some gluten-free options. Read each location’s evidence and preparation notes rather than applying a brand’s reputation to every venue.

A meal made without obvious wheat ingredients can still raise preparation questions. FDA explains cross-contact as gluten being present through contact with gluten-containing foods or shared production circumstances.

Keep in mind

Gluten-free is not a blanket allergen-free label. For celiac disease or other medical needs, use your clinician’s guidance and confirm ingredients and handling directly.

Refined sugar, added sugar & sweeteners

“Refined-sugar-free” is not the same promise as no added sugar, no sugar or low sugar.

What it means

“Refined-sugar-free” is used in different ways by menus and brands. It may signal a preference about which sweeteners are used, but the phrase alone does not tell you how much total sugar a serving contains.

FDA’s added-sugars category includes sugars added in processing, sugars packaged as sweeteners, and sugars from honey and syrups. Naturally occurring sugars in whole fruit, vegetables and milk are different from added sugars. Honey and maple syrup can still contribute added sugars.

How we use it on Des Approved

Our restaurant filter records reported refined-sugar-free menus or options. Read the scope and listed sweeteners; we do not convert that claim into an FDA no-added-sugar or sugar-free claim.

On a standard Nutrition Facts label, “Includes Added Sugars” is part of Total Sugars, not an extra amount to add on top. Single-ingredient honey and syrup labels have a different presentation, so read their footnotes too.

The 7 g is included in 15 g—not added on top. The remaining 8 g is naturally occurring sugar in this example.

Keep in mind

This filter does not establish a meal’s carbohydrate content or its suitability for diabetes or another medical diet. Use the actual nutrition information and professional guidance for those needs.

Seed oils: a preference with important details

Which oil, in which preparation, and according to which source? Start there.

What it means

Common oils discussed as seed oils include canola, soybean, sunflower, safflower, corn, cottonseed, grapeseed and rice bran oil. A menu phrase may not tell you every oil used in sauces, purchased ingredients or separate cooking stations.

We treat avoidance as a browsing preference, not evidence that seed oils are universally harmful. American Heart Association News explains why broad claims that these oils are inherently toxic or inflammatory misrepresent the evidence.

How we use it on Des Approved

Our filters separate a reported whole-menu claim from particular dishes, fryers or preparations. Directory leads and unconfirmed claims remain labelled as leads; read the source level and scope.

A restaurant using olive oil for one preparation does not by itself establish a whole-menu policy. Also, the restaurant oil preference is not automatically applied to cosmetics, soap or cookware seasoning.

Keep in mind

A seed-oil preference is not an allergy-management protocol or a guarantee that a meal is healthier. We do not label butter, tallow, coconut oil or any alternative universally better.

Vegan & vegetarian: similar filters, different choices

Clear definitions, recipe questions and why “some options” still needs a second look.

What it means

In dietary terms, vegan means excluding animal-derived foods, including meat, fish, dairy, eggs and honey. Vegetarian patterns exclude meat, poultry and seafood; common lacto-ovo vegetarian patterns can include dairy and eggs.

These are ingredient-pattern distinctions. They do not automatically establish gluten-free preparation, seed-oil preferences or absence of allergens.

How we use it on Des Approved

We distinguish a reported whole-menu claim from particular vegan or vegetarian options. Where vegetarian compatibility is derived from vegan evidence, the listing labels that basis instead of pretending it is a separate restaurant statement.

If you combine vegan, gluten-free and other “some options” filters, those choices may refer to different menu items. Confirm one actual order that fits every requirement you select.

Keep in mind

A dietary label is not a food-allergy guarantee. Confirm the recipe and handling rather than assuming that animal-free also means free of every ingredient you avoid.

Fragrance, formulas & personal-care labels

Go beyond “unscented” and compare the exact formula you would bring home.

What it means

FDA notes that some cosmetics labelled unscented still contain fragrance ingredients used to mask other smells. A product can also have an ingredient’s own smell without added perfume; scent alone is not a formula audit.

Under cosmetic-labeling rules, fragrance mixtures may be listed as fragrance rather than every individual component. That makes a complete, clearly described formula more useful than a general “clean” slogan.

How we use it on Des Approved

Our no-added-fragrance preference is based on the recorded formula and manufacturer information. In the relevant cleaning, makeup and skincare categories, we look for a disclosed formula without listed added perfume or essential oils—not a natural-only formula.

Preservatives, synthetic ingredients, botanical extracts and pigments are not automatically excluded. Baby products are ingredient-screened only, not independently infant-safety certified. Cleaning-product use, dilution and storage instructions remain important.

Keep in mind

No added fragrance listed is not a promise of zero irritation or universal tolerance. Missing ingredient information stays an unknown, not a reason to fill in reassuring assumptions.

Cookware, storage & food-contact materials

Read the cooking surface, core, lid, seal and handle as separate parts of the story.

What it means

Our steel and glass preferences describe documented principal food-contact surfaces or vessels. They do not mean every component of the product is that material.

Our no-PTFE-cooking-coating preference records the stated cooking-surface information. It is not an independent PFAS test of the entire product, and it is not a guarantee of zero migration.

How we use it on Des Approved

Cookware records distinguish surfaces from cores, handle coatings and seasoning. Storage records separate a glass or steel vessel from lids, gaskets, caps and other components. Kitchen tools need documented principal food-contact materials.

A glass container may still have a plastic lid or rubber seal. A steel cooking surface may sit over a different core. We keep those details visible rather than compressing the entire item into “plastic-free” or “chemical-free.”

Keep in mind

The listing is not an independent migration, nickel-tolerance or whole-appliance safety test. Unknown component details stay in the limitations.

Cotton, wool & the rest of the garment

Fiber content is useful information. It is not the same as a full finish-and-residue assessment.

What it means

Our cotton and wool preferences refer to the material information recorded for the exact item. Read whether the statement covers the principal fabric or the complete product, including separate components.

An organic or certification claim should identify its scope. We distinguish a manufacturer-reported claim from a certificate or independent test that has actually been checked.

How we use it on Des Approved

Our clothing and home selections document cotton or wool principal materials and known construction details. A reported 100% cotton fabric does not independently verify dyes, finishes, residues, stitching, labels or elastic components.

Cotton and wool are separate preferences. Do not apply a textile’s material claim to a brand’s entire collection or assume every color and construction has identical details.

Keep in mind

These are material-disclosure screens, not independent residue testing or a promise of personal allergy tolerance. “Natural fiber” alone does not answer every question about the finished item.

We look for Disclosed steel, iron or glass cooking surfaces; cores and seasoning recorded.

We hold or exclude Unknown coatings/materials or PTFE/fluoropolymer cooking coatings.

No zero-migration or nickel-tolerance guarantee. Lids and handles considered separately.

Makeup

We look for Full published formula; no listed added parfum/fragrance or essential oils; pigments identified.

We hold or exclude Incomplete formula or hidden scent blend; unsupported SPF or medical claims.

Preservatives, seed oils, extracts and synthetic pigments are not automatically excluded. No universal skin/eye tolerance promise.

We look for Exact item disclosing cotton or wool principal fabric and known construction details.

We hold or exclude Undisclosed fiber blends or certification attributed to an item without evidence.

Dilution, storage, surface restrictions and other label precautions still apply; no harmlessness/disinfectant guarantees.
